Football was back this weekend and it came back with a bang. It was a fun weekend for neutrals and fans of smaller teams, but not so much everyone else. This is my Monday review for the games gone by last week.
England’s premier division threw a curveball at us this weekend. There were more draws than actual results. The Merseyside derby, Liverpool v Everton, was an enthralling match with is own highs and lows for either set of supporters. It ended 2-2 which was a fair result given the balance of play. Chelsea was flying high in their first half against Southampton, but it did not last long. New signing Timo Werner scored two and assisted one but an inspired Southampton came back to draw it after half time. Manchester City completed their yearly victory over Arsenal whereas Manchester United emphatically triumphed over Newcastle. The highlight of the weekend, however, was West Ham’s 15-minute comeback against London rivals Spurs to grab a late draw.
It was an unusually high scoring weekend in the Serie A. Napoli drubbed Atalanta 4-1, with new signing Victor Osimhen on the scoresheet. The Milan derby ended with AC Milan coming away with a victory thanks to Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s brace. Juventus drew away to Crotone in an uneventful encounter, and Cagliari pulled out a late victory against Torino. Sampdoria pulled off a shock victory against Lazio, and newly promoted Spezia came back from 2 goals down to draw against Fiorentina.
Spain’s top flight was surprising, to say the least. Defending champions Real Madrid held a shock loss against minnows Cadiz in a flat game. FC Barcelona suffered the same fate, succumbing to a penalty by Jamie Mata of Getafe to lose 1-0. Athletic Club pulled off an expected victory against Levante, whereas Elche came off as surprising victors against Alaves. Atletico Madrid pipped Celta Vigo 2-0 to win only their second game out of four. Villarreal went 2-1 over Valencia and leapfrogged over Real Madrid to sit on the top of the points table.
In Germany, there were no radical results as compared to the rest of Europe. Title hopefuls RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund won their games against Augsburg and Hoffenheim without much fuss. Leipzig won 2-0 and Dortmund won 1-0. Bayern Munich thumped Arminia Bielfield on their way to defend their Bundesliga crown. Other notable results include Leverkusen 1-0 Mainz, Stuttgart 2-0 Hertha Berlin and finally, Wolfsburg 1-1 Monchengladbach.
France got on as usual, with PSG thumping Nimes 4-0, and Mbappe scoring twice. Newly promoted Lorient defeated Reims 3-1. Marseille beat Bordeaux 3-1 and Lyon just about kept their nerve to win 3-2 against Strasbourg. Lille emphatically beat Lens 4-0, with Yilmaz, Bamba, Ikone and Yazici on the scoresheet. Other important results were Angers 1-1 Metz, Monaco 1-1 Montpellier, and finally, Saint-Etienne 1-3 OGC Nice.
That was the round-up of fixtures that took place over the weekend. What did you think of the games? Did your favourite team win? Drop your thoughts in the comments below.
