Kajal, a young girl from a mall district of Bihar wanting to live an independent life, comes to Noida to stay with her cousin Dolly while searching for an honorable job but at the end up at a sex-chat call center. On the face of it, Dolly has the perfect family set up with her husband and two kids, but is it really? or it’s just the story of every other Indian woman who is just living her life for the sake of her children and societal pressure, And will Kajal be able to live the life of her dreams eventually or will just lose herself in the brightness of Delhi-NCR?
Great script with great direction, I loved it how this movie breaks the stereotype about homosexuality and sex-life improvement. ‘Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare’ calls out the hypocrisy. Director Alankrita Shrivastava’s film makes a strong point on gender roles, societal norms, and moral judgments. As Dolly and Kajal’s lives take them through different circumstances, they are first out to judge each other’s life’s choices, but eventually, they realize they are not very different and start supporting each other which is very emotional to see. Deep down, as women, they are looking for the same things, craving the same freedom.
The performances are overall are amazing with great actors Konkona, bhumi, and Vikrant messey. Konkona Sen Sharma as Mrs.Yadav or Dolly is superlative as her character moves through an entire arc in this film, exploring her relationship with her husband, her son Pappu and her mother. Bhumi Pednekar also dishes out a stellar act with a character craving for freedom. Amol Parasher stands out as the sweet delivery boy, Osmaan. Vikrant Massey as Kajal’s married lover steals the show and once again states her powerpack performance, Pradeep, is superb, as is Aamir Bashir as Dolly’s disgruntled husband, and Karan Kundra s DJ Teja nails the fukra DELHI-NCR guy relative of a powerful goon/party-member.
Although on the flipside the film’s narrative packs in too many angles and sub-texts and at times, leaves some threads underdeveloped with bizarre music. But overall, ‘Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare’ drives home the message that it sets out to give and successfully leaves an impact.
Ultimately, ‘Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare’ brings out the different shades of womanhood through its layered narrative and pushes one to be who they want to be. And damn it, if society has other dreams for you.
