The superhero genre is something that has saturated the media quite a lot in recent years. For instance, Marvel released 23 movies in 11 years. All Marvel movies follow the same formula. This has led to a phenomenon called superhero fatigue. And this has led to a drop in interest in superhero movies/TV Shows. So, The Boys might seem like an odd proposition. But it is a difference-maker in the world of superheroes.

What makes the show so different?

The Boys shows how superheroes would have fared in real life. Because they are beings with immense superhuman strength and ability, they have to live differently from us. In this world, the heroes are controlled and monitored by a corporate giant called Vought. But they don’t always have the purest of intentions in their mind. Vought’s main aim is to use their superheroes for profit. They are a company, and ultimately their goal is to make money. They have a twisted view of the world, and it is up to the rag-tag group of people known as The Boys to stop them.

The main superheroes in this world, known as the Seven, are the face of Vought. The seven are heavily based on DC’s Justice League, with most of their heroes being direct evil mirrors to their JL counterparts. For instance, the leader of the Seven is Homelander, an evil Superman clone. The superheroes basically don’t have any apparent weakness, and it is up to The Boys to find out the weakness and, to exploit them.

Why should you watch it?

In this day and age of blockbuster superhero movies, The Boys stands out as a different and interesting alternative to these superhero movies. It is a TV show that puts quality first.

The writing is brilliant. Season one, in my opinion was one of the best first seasons of a TV show ever. With a wow factor, and a quality of writing to rival even the best TV shows ever, it is on course to become one of, if not, the best TV shows. Season 2 is currently out, and it is just as good as the first season. And with season 2 ending on a cliffhanger, the next season is going to give us all the answers. Amazon Prime have hit a jackpot with this show.
